Getting to Caernarfon Castle

By road

Caernarfon is reached via the A4085, A487(T) or B4366. By rail

Caernarfon itself is not on the national rail network. The nearest mainline station is Bangor, about 10 miles (16km) away on the Crewe–Bangor/Holyhead route, with regular services from Chester, Manchester and North Wales coastal towns. From Bangor, local buses run on to Caernarfon — allow 30–40 minutes for the onward bus journey.

By bus

Caernarfon's bus station is around 200 yards / 220 metres from the castle. Routes 5, 5A and 5B run between Bangor and Caernarfon, useful if you've arrived by train. By bike

Caernarfon lies directly on National Cycle Network Route 8, part of the Lôn Las Cymru long-distance route running the length of Wales — a popular way to combine a castle visit with exploring the Menai Strait or the edge of Snowdonia National Park.

By air & sea

The nearest airports with scheduled UK services are Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester, both roughly 2–2.5 hours' drive away; there is no local commercial airport. Caernarfon is also an occasional stop for smaller cruise excursions and boat trips along the Menai Strait, given its harbourside location on the River Seiont.
