Is Caernarfon Castle National Trust or English Heritage?
Neither. This is one of the most-searched questions about the castle, and the honest answer trips a lot of visitors up when they try to use the wrong membership card at the gate.
Caernarfon Castle is managed by Cadw — the Welsh Government's own historic environment service. It is not a National Trust property, and it is not an English Heritage property. Both are separate organisations with separate membership schemes that don't cover Cadw sites.
What is Cadw?
Cadw (a Welsh word meaning roughly "to keep" or "to preserve") is the historic environment service of the Welsh Government — a government body, not a charity. It's responsible for the care and promotion of Wales's built heritage, including Caernarfon, Conwy, Harlech and Beaumaris castles, Caerphilly Castle, and dozens of other sites across Wales.
