Parking at Caernarfon Castle

The nearest car park

Per Cadw's own visitor guidance, the most convenient option is the long-stay public pay-and-display car park at the waterfront (Slate Quay), directly adjacent to the castle. From here, the walk to the visitor centre involves a short, steep climb up to the entrance, which faces the Quay — manageable on a standard town pavement, but worth knowing about if you're travelling with anyone who finds slopes difficult.

Caernarfon town has several further car parks within a short walk of the walled town and castle, useful if the waterfront car park is full during busy summer weekends. As an independent guide we don't operate or manage any of these car parks and can't guarantee real-time availability or current rates — check the local council's or Cadw's own signage on arrival, or the Cyngor Gwynedd (Gwynedd Council) website for official pay-and-display pricing, since parking is council-run rather than Cadw-run.

Is there free parking near Caernarfon Castle?

Not directly at the castle — the closest car parks are pay-and-display. Some visitors find free on-street parking a little further from the old town centre, but restrictions vary street by street and are easy to get wrong as a visitor; a short paid stay at the Slate Quay car park is usually the least stressful option, especially for a first visit.

Coach parking

If you're arriving by coach or as part of a tour group, coach parking and drop-off arrangements should be organised in advance — contact Cadw directly on 03000 252239 or castellcaernarfon@llyw.cymru for current guidance, since this isn't published in detail on the standard visitor page.

Toilets

Toilets are available both at the waterfront car park and within the castle itself, per Cadw's visitor information.
